Clint Eastwood sues over claims he’s ditched movies for CBD business

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Clint Eastwood filed lawsuits Thursday for fraudulently using his name to sell CBD products and allegations that he withdrew from the film business to enter the wellness industry.

The 90-year-old “Dirty Harry” star claims that his name and likeness have been used in online scams to sell CBD butter, chewing gum and other products.

CBD or cannabidoyl is a non-psychoactive compound in cannabis and is also derived from the hemp plant. It was legalized in the United States in 2018.

“Mr. Eastwood has not and has never had any connection with the production, promotion and / or sale of any CBD products,” the lawsuit states.

The first case cites an online news article in an alleged interview in which Eastwood falsely revealed that he was developing a new CBD line and “moving away from the spotlight to spend more time in his wellness business.”

Eastwood, a two-time Oscar winner, director and actor, rarely approves of anything, the case said. In addition, he “does not express a view on CBD products or the legitimate CBD industry,” his spokesman said in a statement.

A second lawsuit alleges that the program code was used to illegally insert Eastwood’s name into some online searches for CBD products.

The two related cases, which allege defamation, trademark infringement and invasion of confidentiality, seek unspecified damages and injunctions. They have been taken to a federal court in California against a number of laboratories, corporations and individuals, but the trial says their true identities are unknown.

“My client is not a person to sit idly by, as defendants use his good name to trick customers into buying products with which he has nothing to do,” Eastwood’s lawyer Jordan Sussman said in a statement.

Eastwood won an Oscar for directing Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby. His latest film, Richard Jewel, was released in 2019.
